YouTube editor handoff template
Your editor sends back a cut that is technically what you asked for and nothing like what you meant.
What is inside
One row per video, and the row is the brief. It starts with the practical half: the video title, exactly where the footage lives, the target length you want back, and one of your own videos as a style reference. Then the taste half, which is the part that usually goes unsaid. The music mood, the b-roll you want covered, how lower thirds should read, what the chapters are, and a Do not cut column for the moments that have to survive the edit whatever else goes.
The last few columns track the job rather than the video. A deadline, which revision round you are on, and a status dropdown that runs Sent, In progress, Review, Approved. A grey column counts the days left before the deadline. Three figures pinned at the top tell you how many edits are in progress, how many are sitting with you for review, and how many have gone past their deadline.
How to use it
- Open the link below and take your own copy, with File then Make a copy. The original stays untouched and your copy is yours to change.
- Read the Example tab, which has three briefs filled in, including a Short. The Handoff tab next to it is empty and is the one you type into.
- Fill the row before you send the footage, then share the sheet with your editor and move the status along as the cut comes back. Add a line to Do not cut every time a good moment gets trimmed out.
Before you hire anyone
A brief is the thing you are actually buying. Hiring a YouTube editor covers which half of the edit to hand over first, what a first hire tends to cost, and how to give channel access without sharing a password.
The part a spreadsheet cannot do
This sheet is a good brief and nothing more. It cannot mark up the timecodes for you, it cannot tell you the cut came back late, and every row is one you wrote out by hand for a video the rest of your workflow already knows about.
The video this brief belongs to is also a row in the YouTube Content Calendar. Both live with the rest of the set at the template library.
Chewbr is being built so the brief comes out of the work you already did, across all 47 steps of a video. The waitlist is at /waitlist. No date on it yet. You will know first.
