Backdrop

Separation is the thing to get right. Move a few feet off the wall and the hard shadow behind your head disappears, and any light aimed at the background can then do its own job. That distance changes the look more than the surface does.

Paper rolls give a clean unbroken colour and tear as soon as they get scuffed. Fabric needs steaming or it reads as creased on camera. A dressed set with shelves and a lamp gives depth and takes longer to reset. Green screen is a different decision again, since it demands even lighting across the whole surface and punishes anything less.
