Tilt

Also called: tilt shot, tilt up, tilt down

The camera stays put and the lens swings up or down. A pan does the same thing horizontally. Raising or lowering the whole camera body is a different move with its own name, and the two look nothing alike on screen. Tilts reveal scale, follow someone standing or sitting, and shift attention from a detail to the person holding it. They are also the easiest move to get wrong, because a stiff tripod head gives you a jerky start, a jerky stop, and nothing usable in between.
