LED panel

Also called: panel light

Panels are popular because they run cool, draw little power, dim smoothly and often let you set colour temperature or full colour from the back of the unit or a phone. Most ship with a diffuser, and a softbox in front widens the source and softens the shadow edge.

Two specs decide whether one is worth buying. Output tells you how far away it can sit and still do anything, and colour accuracy, quoted as CRI or TLCI, tells you whether skin will look right. Cheap panels lean green, which no amount of white balancing fully removes. Flicker at higher frame rates is the other thing to test before a shoot.
