Taking out the mirror box lets light reach the sensor continuously, so the viewfinder shows a processed live image and autofocus runs off the sensor itself. For video that combination is why the category took over: dependable continuous autofocus with eye tracking, a flip-out screen, and a smaller body than the equivalent DSLR.
The system is the real purchase. Lenses, batteries and the lens mount outlast any body, and changing brand later means buying all of it again. Overheating on long takes and battery life are the two specifications to check first if you record to camera for an hour at a time.
