Background removal

Also called: cutout, cut-out, knockout

Most thumbnail work starts here. Isolate the person or object, discard the rest, then drop the cutout over a background that carries the idea. Tools run from one-click AI removal in Photoshop, Canva or Photopea through to hand-painted masks, and shooting against a plain wall or a green screen makes all of them cleaner. Hair and motion blur are where the automatic versions fail, and a ragged edge reads as cheap even at thumbnail size, where nobody can see the detail but everybody feels it. A soft stroke or a subtle shadow behind the cutout separates it from the background so it stops looking pasted on.
