Packaging: Titles, Thumbnails & Hooks
Bait-and-switch
Also called: switch, misleading packaging
A title and thumbnail set an expectation, and the opening either pays it or it does not. Bait-and-switch is what happens when it does not: the question in the title goes unanswered, or the moment shown in the thumbnail happens nowhere in the video. Viewers leave early. Repeated across a channel, it teaches an audience to distrust your packaging before they even click, which costs you the videos that would have delivered. There is a difference between a bold promise and a false one, and a dramatic title that the video actually pays off is doing exactly what it was written to do.
