Bounce light

Aim a light at a pale surface and use what comes back. The reflected beam arrives from a much larger area than the lamp itself, so it wraps around a face and takes the hard edge off shadows. This is why a bare bulb pointed at a ceiling flatters a room that the same bulb pointed at a face would ruin. You lose output, roughly one or two stops depending on distance and surface, and you inherit the colour of whatever you bounced off: a beige wall gives warm skin and a green one gives you a problem. Any large pale surface works, and a folding reflector is the portable version.
