Dynamic Microphone

Sound moves a diaphragm attached to a coil sitting in a magnetic field, and that movement generates the signal. The design needs no power to work, survives being dropped, and takes very loud sources without distorting, which is why the SM58 has been on stages for decades and the SM7B sits in front of most podcast hosts.

The cost is output level. A dynamic gives a quieter signal than a condenser, so it wants a preamp with plenty of clean gain, and an inline booster is a common fix on cheaper interfaces. It also gets used close, an inch or two from the mouth, which is part of the setup rather than an optional extra.
