Histogram
Also called: exposure histogram
Shadows read on the left, highlights on the right, midtones in the middle. A tall spike jammed against the right edge means clipped highlights with no detail left to recover. Camera screens lie to you outdoors and in a dark room, so this is the check that survives whatever the ambient light is doing. There is no correct shape. A night scene is supposed to sit left, and what you are looking for is whether either end has hit the wall.
