Master shot

Also called: master

Shoot the scene right through in the wide first, then collect your closer angles and inserts. In the edit the master gives you geography, a clean version of every line, and somewhere to fall back on when a close-up refuses to cut. For a creator alone with one camera, the equivalent is running the full take wide and repeating sections for the punch-ins. Its value shows up when something goes wrong. Without one you find the gap in the edit, once the set has gone.
