Selects

Also called: pulling selects, selects reel, keepers

Pulling selects means watching everything once, flagging the parts worth keeping and setting the rest aside. Depending on the job that could be the good take of each line, the two seconds of a five-minute b-roll clip that actually holds up, or the moments in an interview where somebody said the thing well.

It exists to separate judgement from assembly. Deciding what is good while also building a sequence is how editors end up four hours in with two minutes cut and half the rushes still unwatched. Doing selects as its own pass also means somebody other than the editor can do it, which is usually the first job a solo creator hands off.
