Animated captions

Also called: word-by-word captions, karaoke captions, pop-on captions

Burned into the picture rather than delivered as a subtitle track, these captions appear a word or a phrase at a time, often with a colour change or a scale bump on the word being spoken. Editing tools generate them from a transcript, so the work is styling and correction instead of typing.

Two catches come with them. Because they are part of the image, they are invisible to search, to translation and to screen readers, so a real caption track still earns its place alongside. And anything placed low in a vertical frame risks sitting behind the platform's own interface.
