The thumbnail downloader, and the 120-pixel shrink test
Pull every resolution a video hosts, and use the smallest one as a free shrink test on somebody else's work.
Not sure if Plan is your weak phase? The free 3-minute workflow audit will tell you.
Scout the competition is step 3 of the 47, and squinting at feed-size crops is a poor way to do it. The thumbnail downloader pulls every resolution YouTube hosts for a video, so you can look at what beat you properly instead of guessing from a 320-pixel-wide version.
What you get
| Size | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| maxres | 1280x720, the one you want |
| standard | 640x480 |
| high | 480x360 |
| medium | 320x180 |
| default | 120x90 |
Watch URLs, youtu.be short links and Shorts links all work, on any public video. Downloads are direct and carry no watermark.
The small sizes are more useful than they look
Everybody reaches for maxres, and it is the right file to study. The tiny ones have a job too.
Doing this across five videos in your niche is quicker than any amount of theory about text size, and the answer is usually the same: fewer words, bigger, one focal point.
Build a board before you sketch
The step this feeds is sketching two thumbnail concepts. Going into that with a folder of the ten strongest thumbnails in your niche is a completely different exercise from staring at a blank canvas.
Look for the pattern nobody has broken. If every thumbnail in your niche is a face on the left with three words on the right, that is either the format that works or the format everybody copied without checking. Both are worth knowing, and you can only see it with the images side by side.
Archive your own before you change them
The less obvious use. When you swap a thumbnail on an older video, the original is gone from your side of the process, and YouTube will happily serve you the new one forever.
Pull the current image first. If the swap performs worse, you want the old file, and rebuilding it from memory is a job nobody enjoys.
What it cannot do
It reads what YouTube publishes, so a video that never had a custom thumbnail returns an auto-generated frame. That is still worth seeing, because an auto-picked frame on a video doing well tells you the packaging was not what carried it.
Very old videos sometimes have no maxres version at all, since the higher resolutions were added to the platform later than the small ones.
A note on using what you find
Study the composition, the colour and the crop. Downloading somebody's thumbnail and reusing the image itself is their work and their likeness, and the reason the good ones work is rarely the picture on its own anyway.

The wider version of this job is competitor research, and what you find feeds straight into sketching two thumbnail concepts. When it is your turn to build one, make the thumbnail covers it.
