Each flap swings in from one edge, so with all four you can shape a rectangle of light and keep it off the back wall or out of the lens. They mount on the front of a fixture and get hot, which is why they have handles. Any flat black surface does the same job for nothing. A piece of foam board, a book, a folded card taped to a stand.
