Cardioid
Also called: cardioid pattern, supercardioid, hypercardioid
That shape is why a cardioid suits a room you cannot treat. Point it at your mouth and the reflective wall behind it contributes far less than it would to an omnidirectional capsule.
Supercardioid and hypercardioid tighten the front further and pay for it with a rear lobe, so the tighter microphone is sensitive to whatever sits directly behind it. Aim a hypercardioid shotgun down at a presenter and it hears the ceiling. Aim it up from below and it hears the floor and a computer fan.
