Establishing shot

Also called: establisher

Cutting straight to a face leaves people briefly disoriented. An establishing shot removes that friction by handing over the geography first, and it does not have to be a drone shot of a city. A wide of the desk before you sit down at it does the same job. The counter-argument is speed, since opening wide costs seconds at the point retention is most fragile, which is why many creators place the establisher just after the hook.
