Wide shot

Also called: long shot, WS, full shot

It does the establishing work in a sequence, telling an audience the geography of a space before closer shots narrow attention down to faces and details. In creator work the wide is also the safety net in a multi-camera setup, the frame you cut to when a closer angle has a mistake in it. The cost is intimacy. A face is small and expression barely reads, so wides rarely hold for long on their own. Naming conventions vary between crews. Some use full shot for head to toe and keep wide or long for anything broader.
