Foley

Named after Jack Foley, who developed the technique at Universal, the job means performing footsteps, cloth movement, door handles and handled objects in sync with the edit. Recording them separately gives you control a location track cannot offer. Each element sits on its own channel at its own level.

Most of it goes unnoticed, which is the point, though its absence registers as a scene that feels oddly thin. Creators borrow the idea at a smaller scale by recording the click of the thing being reviewed or the pour of the coffee, because a library effect rarely matches what is on screen.
