Handheld shot

There is no tripod, no gimbal and no shoulder rig. The camera rides on the body, and every breath, step and shift of weight ends up in the picture. That is the reason to choose it, because handheld reads as immediate and unstaged, and both documentary and drama use it for exactly that. It is also the quickest way to work, since there is nothing to set up. The cost is fatigue and inconsistency. Held at arm's length on a long lens the wobble becomes unwatchable, so the technique is to keep the lens wide, pull the camera in against your body and brace on a wall or your own elbows. Stabilisation smooths whatever is left.
