Wide-angle lens

On a full-frame camera anything below roughly 35mm counts as wide, and below about 20mm as ultra-wide, while crop-sensor bodies need shorter numbers for the same view. The broad field is why it works handheld and in small rooms. It also exaggerates distance, so backgrounds fall away and anything close to the glass looks larger. That last property is the catch: a face filmed close on a wide lens gets a stretched nose and a looming forehead. Keep some distance from the subject, or step back and accept the wider frame.
