Editing & Post-Production

In and out points

Also called: in point, out point, mark in mark out

Marked with the I and O keys in nearly every editor, they define the range any following operation acts on. In the source viewer they set which part of a clip drops into the timeline. On the timeline they define a range for looping playback, for rendering a preview, or for exporting only that section. That last use causes one very specific panic: an export that stops early or starts late, because a stray pair was still sitting on the sequence and the export dialogue was set to range instead of whole timeline. Clearing them takes a keystroke and saves an hour.
