Insert shot

The insert shows something already present in the scene at a size the main shot cannot deliver. A close-up of the button being pressed, the ingredient going in, the paragraph pointed at. Editors love them. An insert covers a cut, so you can compress a rambling take without a visible jump. Grab a handful every time you film, even when you cannot yet see the need, because nobody ever goes back for them and the edit always wants more. Keep it distinct from a cutaway, which shows something outside the immediate action, such as a reaction or a wide of the location.
