Cutaway

Also called: cutaway shot

Interview footage is the clearest case. The subject is talking, you need to remove a rambling 30 seconds, and a straight cut leaves a visible jump. Drop in a shot of their hands, the workshop, the thing they are describing, and the join disappears. Cutaways also do work of their own, showing what is being talked about instead of asking the viewer to imagine it. Shoot more of them than you think you need, because the moment you are in the edit hunting for a cutaway that does not exist is the moment you learn this.
