Filming & Production
Pickup shot
Also called: pickups, pick-up
Pickups are the shots you go back for. In the edit you find a jump that needs a cutaway, a line that was mumbled, a product shot nobody thought to get, or a transition with nothing to cut to. Filming them later is completely normal and no one watching can tell, provided you match the light, wardrobe and camera position closely enough. That last part is where pickups fail. A different time of day, a haircut, or a microphone moved an inch will show on screen even when the new performance is better. Keeping a lighting diagram and a frame grab from the original setup makes them far easier.
