In video that means something like Magic Bullet or Boris FX inside Premiere and Resolve. In audio it means the compressors, de-noisers and equalisers that load into your DAW as VST, AU or AAX. In a browser it usually means an extension such as a channel analytics overlay. Plugins are a large part of why two people with identical software produce different work. The costs are real too. They break on host updates, they add render time, some phone home for licence checks, and a project full of them stops opening on a machine that lacks them. Keep the list short and write it down.
