Adobe After Effects

Also called: After Effects, AE

Built around layers and keyframes, After Effects works on one shot at a time, stacking elements inside a short composition and animating their properties. That makes it the tool for lower thirds, animated text, graphics tracked to something moving in frame, green screen keys and clean-up work. The confusion worth clearing up is with Premiere Pro. Premiere assembles a whole video out of many clips and handles a long timeline comfortably, while After Effects will crawl on the same job because it is built to render complex single shots. Most workflows use both, cutting in Premiere and sending individual shots across for treatment. The learning curve is steep enough that many creators buy templates before building anything themselves.
