Editing & Post-Production

SRT file

Also called: subrip, .srt, subtitle file

Open one in Notepad and you see a number, a line reading 00:00:04,120 to 00:00:07,480, the caption text, then a blank line before the next cue. That is the whole specification, and that simplicity is why every platform accepts it. YouTube will also let you download its auto-generated captions as SRT, correct the names and technical terms it misheard, and upload the fixed file back. SRT carries no styling, so anything needing position, colour or karaoke timing wants VTT or ASS instead.
