Thumbnail face

Also called: shocked face, surprised face, reaction face

Shock, delight, alarm: the thumbnail face is a performance for a single frame, usually captured in a few minutes at the end of a shoot instead of grabbed from the footage. It exists because a face is the fastest thing a human eye resolves in a crowded feed, and a strong expression tells a viewer how the video will feel before they read a word.

Where it goes wrong is the mismatch. YouTube's systems have no preference about how many faces appear in a thumbnail, so the reacting is done by viewers, and an expression the video never earns teaches your audience to distrust the next one. A recognisable creator's face works partly as a brand mark, which is why it does more for an established channel than for a first impression.
