Visual hook
Also called: opening visual
Viewers decide fast, and they decide on what they can see before they have processed a sentence. The visual hook is whatever occupies the frame at the start: motion, a strange object, the aftermath of something, a face mid-reaction. It works by planting a question the viewer wants answered. A common failure is opening on a static talking head against a plain wall while the spoken hook does all the lifting alone. Small changes fix a lot. Start on the thing you are about to discuss, or on the end result, and the opening suddenly has something to hold while you talk.
