Analytics, Retention & Metrics
Views
Also called: view count, view
On long-form video a view is logged when someone deliberately starts playback and watches enough for it to register as a genuine play. YouTube then validates the count and strips out traffic it judges artificial, which is why the number can settle in the first few hours.
Shorts work differently. Since 2025 a Short is credited with a view the moment it appears and plays in the feed, closer to an impression than a decision. The older, stricter measure survives under the name engaged views, and that is the one used for Shorts revenue share and Partner Program eligibility. Holding a Shorts view count against a long-form one is comparing two different things.
