Abridged series

The format dates to the mid-2000s and Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series, which set the template: take a show, compress each episode to a few minutes, throw out the original dialogue and dub new lines over the footage for jokes. It launched a whole fandub scene and a fair number of voice acting careers. Copyright is the permanent constraint, since the underlying footage belongs to the rights holder and Content ID finds it, so abridgers live with claims and takedowns as part of the arrangement. The scene is quieter than at its peak, though new series still appear and the older ones hold devoted audiences.
