Other Platforms & Creator Culture

Algospeak

Also called: unalive

Unalive for killed, seggs, corn, and a hundred other substitutions that started on TikTok and spread everywhere else. Some of it is defensive, some is habit, and by now plenty of it is simply how people write online, used in places where nothing is being moderated at all.

Whether any of it works is unproven from the outside, and the rules move underneath it. YouTube relaxed its profanity policy in 2023 and went back through uploads demonetised for swearing in the opening seconds to restore them. Moderation at that scale runs on classifiers with human reviewers behind them. The cost is certain enough: writing around a subject makes you harder to understand and harder to find.
