Ad Break

Also called: break marker, ad slot

Ad breaks come in three positions: pre-roll before playback, mid-roll during the video, and post-roll at the end. Mid-rolls are the ones creators control, and videos longer than eight minutes are eligible for more than one of them, which is why so many monetised channels land at that length. A break is an opportunity rather than a guarantee. YouTube decides whether to fill it, weighing how likely an interruption is to make the viewer leave, and it steers away from cutting into a sentence or the middle of an action sequence. Marking a break yourself does not force an ad to run there.
