Motion graphics
Also called: mograph, motion design, animated graphics
Motion graphics are the designed layer over your footage: the name card that slides in, the counter ticking up, the map with the route drawing itself, the words that land in time with the voiceover. After Effects is the standard tool and most NLEs now handle simpler versions natively with templates. The distinction people blur is with visual effects, where the goal is to make something look like it was filmed. Motion graphics are meant to look designed. Where they earn their place is explanation, because a number or a relationship lands faster as a diagram than as a sentence you have to hold in your head.
