Callback

Set something up in the first two minutes, come back to it at the end, and the ending lands harder than the same words would cold. Comedy runs on this, and so does documentary, where an object mentioned in passing turns out to matter. Worth separating from a running gag, which repeats to build familiarity. A callback fires once, and if the audience can see the return coming, the payoff has already been spent.
