The constraint does the work. A time limit, a budget, a rule about what you may not use, or a consequence for failing, any of which gives the piece a clear question and a definite ending. That structure is why the format travels so easily across cooking, fitness, gaming, building, fishing and business. Two things sink it. A constraint nobody cares about, and a stake with no teeth, since a challenge with nothing riding on it is just a task performed on camera. The outcome also has to be genuinely uncertain when the viewer starts watching, which is why obviously staged failures land badly.
