Cross-cutting

Film calls it parallel editing: the bomb ticking in one location, the hero stuck in traffic in another, alternating until the two meet. Video essays borrow it to hold an open loop, since one thread can be left hanging at the moment the edit cuts away. Both threads have to be interesting. Cut to a weaker second one and the audience learns to expect a detour every time something gets good, which trains them to skip.
