Employer Identification Number

Also called: EIN, federal tax ID

The IRS issues an EIN to identify a business the way a Social Security number identifies a person. Applying is free and takes minutes online for anyone with a US entity, and sole traders can often use their SSN instead.

Creators outside the United States generally have no use for one. A UK or EU creator paid by an American brand normally supplies a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E, declaring foreign status and claiming any treaty rate on withholding. Getting the form wrong means money withheld at source and a slow refund.
