Framing device
Also called: wrapper, frame narrative
A countdown, a journey with a destination, a challenge with a deadline, a question posed at the top and answered at the end. The device is scaffolding the viewer can feel, and it works because it creates an open loop early that only closes when the video does.
Retention benefits when there is somewhere to arrive. Ten unrelated points in a row give a viewer permission to leave after any of them, while the same ten framed as steps towards a result give them a reason to stay. A device only earns its place if you close it, so plant the payoff before you promise it.
