Freebooting

The word came out of the mid-2010s fight over Facebook video, when pages would download a creator's YouTube upload and post the file directly to Facebook, collecting the views and the ad money while the original creator got nothing. Linking to somebody's video is fine. Taking the file and hosting it under your own account is straightforward copyright infringement, and the remedy is a takedown notice with whichever platform hosts the copy. Content ID catches a good deal of it on YouTube. Elsewhere you are usually filing by hand, which is slow enough that the reupload has done most of its numbers before anything happens.
