Freeze frame

Also called: hold frame, frame hold

Pausing on one frame turns motion into a photograph without leaving the timeline. Editors use it to hold a face at the peak of a reaction, to park an object still while an arrow and a label appear, or to open a video on the moment it is building towards before rewinding to the start. Every NLE has it as a right-click on the clip, usually called freeze frame or hold. Two practical notes: pick a frame with no motion blur, because a still lifted from a fast pan looks like a mistake, and add a slight zoom or a border if the freeze runs longer than about 2 seconds, since a dead-still image reads as a playback fault.
