Hero's journey

Also called: the hero's journey, monomyth

Joseph Campbell described the pattern in 1949, and film has run on a simplified version ever since. An ordinary person is pulled out of an ordinary world, meets obstacles and a mentor, hits a low point, and comes back holding something they did not have at the start.

On YouTube it maps onto any video where the creator attempts something hard: a 30-day challenge, a skill learned from scratch, a build that goes wrong. Failing on camera feels like looking incompetent, so that low point is the beat creators cut. A story with nothing at risk has nothing left to resolve.
