Ken Burns effect

Named after the documentary maker whose films made the technique famous. Most editors have it built in as pan and zoom or photo motion. A still cut into a moving sequence reads as dead air, and a gentle push across it keeps the frame alive while narration continues. Two things make it look cheap. Too much speed, when the move should be barely perceptible across several seconds, and too little resolution, since scaling a small image up to zoom leaves the picture soft.
