Legibility

Also called: readability

Legibility is a property of the design under real reading conditions. A thumbnail that looks bold on a 27-inch monitor turns to mush in a feed on a phone held at arm's length, in daylight, while somebody scrolls past at speed. What survives that: heavy type, hard contrast against whatever sits behind it, few enough words to absorb without reading, and a subject big enough to identify in a fraction of a second.
