A creator performs to a track or a spoken clip, matching mouth movement to audio they did not record. Musical.ly built its entire product on it, TikTok inherited it, and it remains a standard on every vertical feed.
What keeps it alive is participation. A sound spreads because joining in is easy, and miming needs no script, no writing and one take. The cost is interchangeability: a hundred people are performing the same clip and the audio does the heavy lifting. Anything that survives past the trend usually brings a character, a running joke or a visual gag the sound alone cannot supply.
