Overpromise

Also called: overpromising, overhype

A title and thumbnail set an expectation. Overpromising is the gap between that expectation and what the viewer actually gets, and it shows up as a clean click followed by an early exit. The damage is not limited to the one video, because a viewer who feels misled once is slower to click on that channel again. The fix is rarely a duller title. Most overpromises come from packaging the video the creator wishes they had made, so either raise the ceiling on the video itself or dial the promise back to something the opening two minutes can pay off.
