USB Microphone

Inside the body sits a small converter turning the capsule's analogue signal into data the computer can read, which is why one cable does everything. That convenience is the appeal and it is also the ceiling. You get one microphone per port, a preamp you cannot control, and monitoring that depends on whichever headphone socket the manufacturer fitted. For one person talking to camera, a decent USB model is genuinely enough. Add a second person, or a camera that also needs the audio, and XLR into an interface becomes the cheaper route.
