Algorithmic association

Also called: channel association

Creators use this to describe the sense that YouTube has filed their channel alongside certain topics and certain other channels, and shows new uploads to those viewers first. The observable version of it sits in Studio, where the Audience tab lists the other channels and videos your viewers watch. What sits underneath is viewer behaviour. YouTube's recommendation system follows what a channel's actual audience already watches and responds to, so the association shifts as that audience shifts. Treating it as a permanent label the platform has stamped on your channel leads people to blame a lock-in that does not exist, when the real constraint is who currently watches and what they click next.
