Attention economy
The idea is older than YouTube: when information is abundant, the thing in short supply is the attention to consume it, so attention becomes what is bought and sold. Herbert Simon made the argument in the 1970s and it describes a recommendation feed almost perfectly.
For creators it reframes the competition. You are up against everything else a person could do with that half hour, so the useful question about a video is what it displaces.
